Statement of Purpose

Having majored in sports education as an undergraduate, I would now like to concentrate on sports management.

Sports play an important role in my life. I engaged in sports very early. Compared to other peers who highly focus on school education, I was full of passion for sports. After my parents found that I was really good at running. They decided to support me to become a professional athlete when I was 7 years old. To be honest, it was a hard decision for me and my family. At that time, a traditional idea still popular in China. The majority of students tend to academic success and neglect the significance of participation in sports. Even though training in sports is challenging and hard, I enjoyed doing something that I really have passion. I desired to be successful in my field.

After 10 years of training in sports, I still haven’t reached the goal that I set in childhood. Instead of clearly knowing what I want to follow and who I want to be, I lost the direction for my life. Sometimes, I will not make sure  I should give up or just keep going. The high-intensity training in sports made my body vulnerable, I got injured more often. However, I knew I never lose the passion for sports. Sports always make me happy. I told myself that It is time to change my direction a little. Thus, I decided to learn more theoretic knowledge about sports.

I had major in sports education in my undergraduate study. When I began it, I got the opportunity to be exposed to the full range of sports courses, such as sports psychology and sports physiology, all of them tended to reinforce and solidify my intense interest in sports. I’ve also had the opportunity to study sports management and recreation studies. They have been both enjoyable and enlightening, providing me with a new and different perspective on the sports world in which we have. In a word, my undergraduate study was a really great experience for me. I always keep in mind one sentence that comes from my favorite professor, that is, “ no matter what you want, try to find something you really have passion ”. Every time when I recall it, I feel that I get the motivation to continue my interest. I want to transfer from performer to profession in my field.

Since I have more than 15 years of experience of participation in sports, I deeply understand that the big difference of sports management between China and United State existed. Also, I want to see the world, a better sports world. Consequently, I came to United State for studying after I graduated from my undergraduate school. As we all know, international students under great pressure when studying in abroad environment which includes cultural difference and other adjustment issues, but I love it

In future, my goal is to set up my own recreation center. In order to reach it, I became a volunteer to teach many international students to do physical activity when I came to GMU. Some of them want to lose weight, others intend to keep fit and healthy. I enjoyed it, especially, when they have improved themselves a lot or formed a good habit for life. It is no doubt that I got enough experience.

However, a great study environment is crucial in my field. Consider about sports management program in GMU, it is amazing. On the one hand, all the professors in my department are professional. For example, Professor. Wiggins, one of the famous professors in sports management, has published more than 15 books about sports. On the other hand, lots of specific fields included in sports management program, such us sports finance and management, sport global management, and the foundation of sport and recreation studies.

In conclusion, I am full of passion and intense interest for sports. I want to continue to study it in GMU. No pain, no gain. Fortunately, I restart clearly understand what I want to do and who I want to be. In future, to be professional in sports is my goal. To catch the goal, I have to improve myself step by step. Obviously, the more I learn, the more I will understand. I promise that I will try my best to study in GMU.
